The Promise by Madeline von FoersterThe art of Madeline von Foerster

Her art extends to the frames she constructs for her work.

More about her at Coilhouse.

On the way to school:

Me: “I slept really well last night and had good dreams. How about you?”

Her: “I slept good too, Mama. I didn’t have dreams. I fell into a big, black, inkspot.”

It’s official: I’m going!

First concert attendance with my sister (words cannot express how excited I am), third Tori concert, first Tori concert in over 10 years, first long solo road trip.

Two things you can count on with a Tori Amos concert: excellent live performance and absolute, personal, wild weirdness (which of the Posse will open the concert??).

Dave’s Long Box: Horror with a heart – Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon

I want to see this.

A pizza created with McDonald’s food as toppings.

I would totally try this. And might have to. Perhaps with a Pepto/Dr. Pepper spritzer, instead of plain Dr. P.

It’s been a long while since I’ve been into Ani D, but this article, a look back at each of the impressive albums she’s released, gets my interest up again. Not only do I love her for her strength, her positivity, her unapologetic feminism and politics, and her kick-ass DIY spirit (yes, she owns her own album label and distributes herself), she’s also a great musician and writer.

 thirty two flavors

squint your eyes and look closer
i’m not between you and your ambition
i am a poster girl with no poster
i am thirty-two flavors and then some
and i’m beyond your peripheral vision
so you might want to turn your head
cause someday you’re going to get hungry
and eat most of the words you just said

both my parents taught me about good will
and i have done well by their names
just the kindness i’ve lavished on strangers
is more than i can explain
still there’s many who’ve turned out their porch lights
just so i would think they were not home
and hid in the dark of their windows
till i’d passed and left them alone

and god help you if you are an ugly girl
course too pretty is also your doom
cause everyone harbors a secret hatred
for the prettiest girl in the room
and god help you if you are a phoenix
and you dare to rise up from the ash
a thousand eyes will smolder with jealousy
while you are just flying past

i’m not trying to give my life meaning
by demeaning you
and i would like to state for the record
i did everything that i could do
i’m not saying  that i’m a saint
i just don’t want to live that way
no, i will never be a saint
but i will always say

squint your eyes and look closer
i’m not between you and your ambition
i am a poster girl with no poster
i am thirty-two flavors and then some
and i’m beyond your peripheral vision
so you might want to turn your head
cause someday you might find you’re starving
and eating all of the words you said

I have just finished this particular Sandman comic, and while I wasn’t bothered by the supposedly low quality of the graphics, I can see the amazing difference that good pencilling and coloring make.

What I’m really loving is the experience of reading the Sandman stuff. I mean, it’s not just words, like in a book, and it’s not just images, like in a movie, and the images don’t flow, like in a movie. Images overlap, stack, fade in and out, are arranged unexpectedly. It’s such an amazing way to get into this story, and I can’t imagine this particular mythos and tale being told any other way. There’s the occasional rumor that a movie will get made from this work, but I just don’t think it would hold up or be the same.
